Authorities identify shotgun-wielding man who fired at a sheriff’s helicopter before being killed by deputies in South L.A.
Authorities have identified the man who was fatally shot by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies on Thursday night after he reportedly fired at one of the agency’s helicopters from a rooftop in South L.A.
Around 7:45 p.m. Thursday, deputies were summoned to a call about a man possibly under the influence and armed with a shotgun in a yard in the 14600 block of Cahita Avenue in an unincorporated part of L.A. County near Compton that was patrolled by the Sheriff’s Department.
When they arrived, the man moved from the backyard and onto the roof of a home, the Sheriff’s Department said in a release, noting that the man continued to ignore orders to surrender.
Authorities said that a sheriff’s helicopter that also responded relayed to deputies at the scene that the man was armed, and later said that he had fired in their direction. According to a department news release, deputies ordered the man to drop his weapon “numerous times†before the shooting occurred.
Two deputies on the ground then shot and killed the man, the department said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. City News Service, citing the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner, reported that the man was 30-year-old Jerman Magana of Compton.
Authorities haven’t released the names of the deputies who opened fire.
The shooting is being investigated by multiple agencies, which is standard protocol.
No one else was injured.
