LAPD shoots and kills man who opened fire near traffic stop
Los Angeles police officers shot and killed a man early Wednesday after he allegedly fired a gun near them during a traffic stop in South L.A., according to authorities.
The shooting happened shortly before 1 a.m. near Western and Florence avenues in the Manchester Square area, LAPD Officer Jader Chaves said.
Police heard and saw a man who did not appear to be connected to the traffic stop fire several shots, according to the LAPD. Officers then shot the man.
The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to treat the man, who died at the scene. No officers were injured.
City Controller Kenneth Mejia vowed to investigate after an email circulated on alleged plans for mass arrests at a cleanup of a homeless encampment.
It was unclear how many officers shot the man or at whom the man was shooting. Those details will be part of the investigation into the shooting, Chaves said.
A ghost gun was recovered at the scene, according to the LAPD. Ghost guns are typically assembled by buyers from prepackaged parts and do not have serial numbers. The LAPD shared a photo of the gun on Twitter but did not specify any further details about it.
During their investigation, police found an illegal cannabis dispensary in a nearby strip mall, according to the LAPD. Six people inside the dispensary were detained by police, authorities said.
