Five people killed, one injured in fiery single-vehicle crash on 710 Freeway
A crash early Monday on the 710 Freeway killed five people, including a 15-year-old, in north Long Beach, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP spokesperson Officer Angelia Gonzales said the deadly single-vehicle crash happened shortly after 4 a.m. on the 710 at the 91 Freeway connector. Five people in the car, including the driver, were killed and one was taken to a hospital. The condition of that person was not known.
Four people were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, and some of them were ejected from the vehicle, according to the CHP.
Highway Patrol officers on the scene determined that the vehicle, a 2011 Hyundai Sonata, struck an impact attenuator — a road safety device intended to absorb some of the energy from a crash— and caught fire.
Dash-camera video of the crash obtained by KTLA-TV Channel 5 showed the vehicle heading down the freeway before striking the attenuator and flipping into the air.
The Los Angeles County coroner’s office identified one of the people killed as 15-year-old George Dobbs.
Kidnapping suspect Efrain Sanchez remains at large after authorities found his wife and infant daughter, the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department said.
The crash remains under investigation, Gonzales said, asking that any witnesses reach out to investigators with the CHP South L.A. station.
All northbound lanes of the 710 were closed because of the crash. By about 8:15 a.m., the CHP had reopened all lanes.
