A man who was armed with a knife at Riverside City College and chased off campus by police surrendered Tuesday at a nearby storm drain, according to authorities.

The around noon, police said. The man’s name was not released, but he was armed with a knife and another weapon, according to Riverside City police Officer Ryan Railsback.

The man ran into a drainage canal that borders the campus and refused to come out, Railsback said. He resurfaced through a manhole and was detained by police, according to Railsback.

The Long Beach Unified School District has settled a lawsuit over the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old by a school safety officer for $13 million.

Students and staff were told to shelter in place after it was reported in the morning that there was police activity near the school’s football field, according to authorities. The school issued a campuswide alert shortly after 9:30 a.m.

The shelter-in-place order was lifted at 12:22 p.m., Riverside City College said in a social media post. Classes were set to resume by 1:30 p.m.
