Samsung, Oculus team up for Galaxy VR headset
Samsung became the latest major tech giant to enter the increasingly crowded virtual reality headset market on Wednesday, teaming up with Facebook’s Oculus VR to announce the Galaxy VR.
The headset works with Samsung’s newly announced Galaxy Note 4 smartphone to give users a mobile virtual reality headset that can be used for gaming or watching video content in a virtual reality environment. The Galaxy Note 4, which has a 5.7-inch screen, slides into an opening at the front of the Galaxy VR, providing the headset with the computing power and screen necessary for it to work.
At its developer conference this summer, Google announced a similar setup called Cardboard. And in March, Facebook entered the virtual reality space by acquiring Oculus VR for $2 billion, while Sony announced Project Morpheus, an upcoming virtual-reality headset for the PlayStation 4.
Samsung was vague about the release of the Galaxy VR, saying that a beta, early-access “innovator’s edition†will be available this year. No price was given.
