Unboxing the Pebble Steel smartwatch [Video chat]
The Pebble Steel is the successor to the company’s first smartwatch, which was released last year. The Steel costs $249 -- $100 more than its predecessor -- but it’s also more stylish.
Pebble began shipping the Steel in late January, a device that is as much a piece of jewelry as it is a smartwatch.
Recently, I had a chance to unbox and review one of these smartwatches, which are available for purchase online for $249.
The Steel is Pebble’s second smartwatch, following the original Pebble that was released in 2013. But the original featured a sporty yet dorky look. The Steel emphasizes style as much as it does functionality.

The Pebble Steel is available to users in either a brushed stainless frame or a black matte. Each version also comes with two types of swappable bands: a metal chain or leather strap.
Like most other wearable devices, the Pebble Steel works by connecting with a user’s smartphone. It’s compatible with the iPhone as well as Android devices.
Users’ smartphones relay information to the Pebble, which flashes users’ notifications on its small e-ink screen. The Pebble is also capable of running apps built specifically for it.
