Despite a major backlash from users protesting a proposed change to its terms of service last month, Instagram was able to increase the number of its monthly active users by 10%.

Instagram now has 90 million monthly active users, according to the company, which updated the figure on its press page.

“Instagram continues to see very strong growth around the world,†Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom told AllThingsD. “With many of the product and internationalization improvements we’ve made, we’ve been excited to see these efforts resonate with users globally.â€

QUIZ: How much do you know about Facebook?

That’s good news for the Facebook-owned photo-sharing social network after it had to deal with a report that said the company had lost users as a result of the unpopular move to change the terms of service.

The New York Post cited figures from an analytics website showing a drop in Instagram’s users. But that data only measured the activity of users who logged into Instagram using their Facebook accounts.

As for the terms of service, Instagram decided to withdraw the proposed changes and revert to an old set of terms. The change would have allowed users’ photos to be part of advertisements that would run within the photo-sharing social network.
