Taco Bell scores win with Doritos taco -- over 200 million served
Taco Bell has sold more than 200 million Doritos-flavored tacos since the fast-food treat debuted in March, making it the most successful new product in the chain’s 50-year history.
I don’t know whether this is a tribute to Taco Bell’s marketing skill or a commentary on the culinary tastes of the American people.
The $1.29 Doritos Locos taco features a nacho cheese-flavored Doritos shell. It’s stuffed with seasoned beef, lettuce and tomatoes, and served in a Doritos-branded “taco jacket.†That’s “wrapper†to you and me.
So how do you follow a slam-dunk like that? Taco Bell is already cooking up two new shell flavors: Flamas and Cool Ranch. They’re being tested at various outlets.
I’ll admit I haven’t sampled a Doritos taco. But colleagues tell me they’re pretty awesome.
Not that the typical muncher of such things cares, but I’ll note in passing that a Doritos taco has 170 calories and 340 milligrams of sodium.
Compared to a Taco Bell XXL Grilled Stuft Burrito (880 calories, 2,020 milligrams of sodium), the Doritos taco is practically a health food.
