The new iPad mini that Apple is likely to release later this year will definitely have a retina display. Unless it doesn’t.

The Internet has provided two reports that claim the opposite about the new iPad mini. Which one to believe?

The first report was posted late Wednesday night by the Wall Street Journal: “Apple’s Next iPad Mini Will Likely Have ‘Retina’ Display From Samsung.â€

Citing “people familiar with the matter,†the Journal reports:

“Apple is working with suppliers in Asia on its next iPad mini with a high-resolution ‘retina’ display, unlike the current iPad mini that comes with a lower-resolution screen, the people said. The size of the new tablet will likely be the same as the current 7.9-inch model, which was released in November last year. Apple has also been contemplating multiple color back covers for the new tablet, they said.â€

Nice scoop! Or is it?

Leading Apple blog 9to5Mac posted its own, very different take: “Apple has A6-based iPad mini without Retina display in the works.â€

Citing “references in the iOS 7 SDK sent to us by a developer,†9to5Mac reports:

“Apple is testing a new iPad mini that includes a faster processor but not a Retina display.â€

What’s an Apple fanboy to do?

Alas, we’ll probably have to wait until October, when the company has said it has some announcements planned, to find out who had the scoop and who has to eat crow.
