Aging Marina del Rey Hotel getting $20-million upgrade
The Marina del Rey Hotel, the first hotel built in the public marina south of Venice, has closed for a $20-million renovation.
Originally opened in 1964, the hotel on Bali Way was due for a makeover, owner Pacifica Hotels said. The upgrade will take until spring and is intended to earn the 160-room inn a four-star rating.
After the improvements, the Marina del Rey Hotel will have 24-hour room service, concierge assistance, an outdoor marina-facing pool and sun deck and an outdoor wedding venue, Pacifica said.

“Our intention with this renovation is to revitalize the Marina del Rey Hotel, while maintaining its classic reputation,†said Matt Marquis, president of Irvine-based Pacifica Hotels.
Marina del Rey lies on 400 acres of unincorporated land in Los Angeles County. In recent years, county officials have mounted a push to spruce up the neighborhood around the public marina that was dedicated in 1965.
The land there remains owned by the county, which has urged leaseholders to upgrade their restaurants, shopping centers, hotels and apartments in the hope of creating a more dynamic community.
The Marina del Rey Hotel is one of five Pacifica hotels in the marina area, the company said. The others are Jamaica Bay Inn, Hilton Garden Inn Marina del Rey, Inn at Marina del Rey and Inn at Venice Beach.
