2015 New York Auto Show: Lexus to reveal all-new RX crossover

Lexus will debut an all-new RX crossover at the New York Auto Show, the automaker confirmed on Friday.

The RX is the darling of the Lexus lineup, pulling in more than 107,000 sales in 2014. That was more than any other vehicle Toyota’s luxury division sells, even though the current generation debuted in 2008.

The original RX was also one of the first luxury crossovers on the market when it launched in 1997.

Details on the new model are scarce, though in keeping with Toyota and Lexus’ approach of launching redesigned models with proven mechanicals underneath, most of the changes to the RX are expected to be cosmetic.

This includes the exterior styling, which Lexus has been keen to make more aggressive through its lineup in recent years. Look for the spindle grille and sharply styled headlights and daytime LEDs currently seen on the rest of the lineup.

Now that Lexus has the smaller NX crossover on the market, this next-generation RX is expected to grow longer to allow room for an optional third row of seats.

The current model’s base V-6 and optional hybrid four-cylinder engine should carry over. Front-wheel-drive will be standard while all-wheel-drive will be optional. Pricing hasn’t been announced though it won’t be any less than the current model, which starts just under $42,000.

The Lexus RX is just one of many launches expected at the 2015 N.Y. Auto Show. Other key debuts include Cadillac’s new CT6 flagship sedan, Scion’s iM and iA cars, the Kia Optima, Jaguar XF midsize sedan, Chevy’s Spark and Malibu, two new McLaren sports cars, and the refreshed Mercedes-Benz GLE crossover.

The show is open to the media on April 1 and 2, and the general public from April 3 to April 15.
