Detroit Auto Show: Toyota teases Furia concept

Toyota will be bringing to the 2013 Detroit Auto Show a sedan concept called the Furia. If the name is unfamiliar, perhaps a more common name will ring a bell: the Corolla.

Toyota hasn’t explicitly said the Furia concept it will debut is the next Corolla. All the company has allowed is that it’s an “exciting new sedan.” But only a quick look at Toyota’s lineup is needed to see the Corolla is the oldest model around.

The current Corolla has been with us since 2008, and features such as its four-speed automatic transmission reflect its age. Competitors such as the Honda Civic, Nissan Sentra, Chevy Cruze and Ford Focus use five- or six-speed automatic transmissions or CVTs for increased fuel economy.

Despite showing its age, the Corolla continues to be very popular with consumers. Toyota sold more than 290,000 Corollas in 2012, making it one of the best-selling cars in the U.S.

Toyota has been mum on details surrounding the Furia concept, and has only released a pair of teaser images showing the car’s trunk lid and taillight, seen above. The company will officially unveil the car at its news conference on Monday. Stay tuned to Highway 1 for coverage of this event, and others from the floor in Detroit.
