Harry Potter fans get two new surprises from J.K. Rowling
Wizards, witches and Muggles, rejoice: Harry Potter Book Night is going worldwide in 2016, and J.K. Rowling has revealed new secrets about the Dursleys.
The Dursley details were revealed by Rowling on Pottermore on June 23, Dudley Dursley’s birthday. On Pottermore, Rowling shared the backstory of Vernon and Petunia Dursley, Harry’s aunt and uncle, their (strained) relationship with his parents and why they hated him.
Meanwhile, Harry Potter Book Night is going global, U.K. publisher Bloomsbury Children’s Books has announced. (In the U.S., the Harry Potter series is published by Scholastic). The celebration will take place Feb. 4.

The first Harry Potter Book Night was held earlier this year (mostly) in England on Feb. 5. Around the country, there were contests, costumes, crafts, games and, of course, readings.
“Once again, fans of all ages will have the chance to celebrate J.K. Rowling’s wonderful novels — and pass the magic on to young readers who haven’t yet discovered these unforgettable books,†Bloomsbury’s website proclaims.
The website urges Harry Potter fans to sign up for updates about Book Night. It also makes some supporting materials available and promises “masses of magical ideas, events and activities for you to get involved with.â€
