Vania King, Yaroslava Shvedova win U.S. Open doubles title

Reporting from New York — Vania King, the petite but complete tennis player from Long Beach, and her doubles partner Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan won their second consecutive major championship Monday at the U.S. Open by quickly completing a rain-delayed 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4) win over second-seeded Liezel Huber and Nadia Petrova of Russia.
King and Shvedova, seeded sixth, have played only seven tournaments together. Two of them have resulted in championships at Wimbledon and now at the Open.
Huber and Petrova had been leading 5-4 in the third set Sunday when the match was stopped by rain.
King, who is 5 feet 5, relatively small on the women’s circuit, said she is finding her doubles success pleasing but not surprising.
“I think I was always a good doubles player,” she said. “I don’t think we [she and Shvedova] expected this because usually great pairs play together for a long time to know each other, but we’ve had that from the beginning.”
