How America Ends Its Wars In a talk put on by Zócalo Public Square and the UCLA Burkle Center, Foreign Affairs magazine editor Gideon Rose considers why so few of America’s orders to cease combat operations manage to stick. From the ambiguous culmination of U.S. involvement in Vietnam to the multiple “ends” of combat missions in Iraq, Rose explores the history of U.S. military campaigns, some of which have petered out rather than ended definitively. Justin Bieber For those who don’t spend much time around teenagers, Bieber is something of a new David Cassidy. He has the classic prerequisites of stardom in this demographic: apple cheeks, stunning orthodontics, the sly pout of troublemakers from Tom Sawyer on forward. But his ascent story — posting cover videos of pop songs on YouTube that just so happened to win over his mentors Usher and Justin Timberlake — belies a jackpot voice that, although it hasn’t quite dropped, is nimble and rakish. JP, Chrissie & the Fairground Boys Chrissie Hynde, the 59-year-old Pretenders frontwoman, joins more than just musical forces with 32-year-old Welsh singer-songwriter JP Jones for a romantic May-December trip into heartfelt country-tinged rock ‘n’ roll. Their collaboration resulted in the recently released album, “Fidelity!,” which lights up with romance, wry humor and old-fashioned melody-making.
