It’s time to look into my crystal ball and see what 2010 has in store for the world of high school sports and beyond.

Here’s what I’m seeing:

Santa Ana Mater Dei’s Gary McKnight, after becoming the winningest basketball coach in California prep history, will be invited to appear on “Dancing With the Stars.â€

Wide receivers will be the No. 1 target of college football recruiters in Southern California this fall, with an intense debate breaking out over who’s best among George Farmer of Gardena Serra, Victor Blackwell of Mater Dei, Antoine Arnold of Temecula Chaparral and Nelson Spruce of Westlake Village Westlake.

The first football game between Westlake and Oaks Christian will attract so many fans that the community’s country clubs, health spas and movie theaters will close early.

Come June, the state’s newest millionaires will be first-round draft picks Dylan Covey, a pitcher from Pasadena Maranatha, and outfielder Austin Wilson from North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake.

Westchester will win its sixth state championship in boys’ basketball.

Pro-baseball scouts will be excitedly calling up their scouting directors, telling them to save some bonus money for 2011 after watching junior left-hander Henry Owens of Huntington Beach Edison strike out 16 in a seven-inning game.

Rumors will spread that several private schools are offering $125,000 and up for the position of head football coach, causing the chairman of the math department to demand a raise.

The last of the Gerhart brothers, Colton, a quarterback, will arrive at Norco in the fall with high expectations and quickly show he’s just like the rest of his siblings, good in sports and great in the classroom.

DeAndre Daniels, a 6-foot-8 forward at Woodland Hills Taft, will emerge as the best basketball player in the City Section.

Kyle Middlebrooks of Fountain Valley will earn the title of fastest sprinter in California when he wins the state championship in track and field at 100 meters.

The best freshman baseball player in Southern California will be Mater Dei catcher Jeremy Martinez.

The newest trend for athletic programs will be to hire a director of player personnel, otherwise known as recruiting coordinator.

The Mission League basketball game between Loyola and Harvard-Westlake on Jan. 11 will be so intense that fans from both schools will leave physically exhausted from cheering too hard.

Patrick Cantley of Anaheim Servite will establish himself as the No. 1 golfer in California and one of the best in the nation.

Receiver Robert Woods of Serra will excite USC fans when he signs a letter of intent in February, then will return a punt for a touchdown in his opening college game against Hawaii.

Akeem Ayers, the pride of Los Angeles Verbum Dei, will receive All-American honors as a linebacker at UCLA, and Mel Kiper Jr. will predict that Ayers will be a first-round NFL draft choice.

The most feared hitters in softball will be junior shortstop Stephany LaRosa of Diamond Bar and senior shortstop Madison Shipman of Valencia. And forget about trying to sign them to a letter of intent. LaRosa is headed to UCLA and Shipman to Tennessee.

Ryon Healy of Encino Crespi, after compiling an 11-0 record on the mound last season, will go 10-0 and pick up the nickname Cy, as in Cy Young.

College baseball coaches across the country will decide that the best one-two starting pitchers in the nation are UCLA sophomores Gerrit Cole (Orange Lutheran) and Trevor Bauer (Newhall Hart).

Josh Mance of Chino Hills and Akawkaw Ndipagbor of Long Beach Poly will be the king and queen of the 400 meters in track this spring.

After 22 years of coaching football, Bill Redell of Oaks Christian will retire and become a TV analyst.

The largest crowd for a regular-season indoor sporting event this spring will come on March 19 at Loyola Marymount, when volleyball powers Loyola and Manhattan Beach Mira Costa meet in an annual match that keeps growing in intensity and excitement.

Michael Woepse of Mater Dei will clear 17 feet in the pole vault and celebrate by dying his hair red.

Former Taft Coach Troy Starr, 1-8 in championship football games, will celebrate a San Diego Section Division II championship when he guides Helix to the title.
