A’s put Kurt Suzuki on 15-day disabled list

The Oakland Athletics put catcher Kurt Suzuki on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of a strained muscle in his side, and optioned outfielder Matt Carson to triple A.

Suzuki was put on the disabled list retroactive to April 24.

Left-hander Trevor Cahill was added to the roster to start against the Blue Jays on Friday, in place of left-hander Brett Anderson (elbow), and catcher Josh Donaldson’s contract was purchased from triple A. Pitcher Joey Devine (right elbow) was transferred to the 60-day DL to make room for Donaldson.

Milwaukee Brewers radio announcer Bob Uecker had successful heart surgery, a six-hour procedure that will keep him away from his beloved team for up to three months.

In a statement, Uecker’s surgeon said he replaced the 75-year-old broadcaster’s aortic valve, aortic root and part of his ascending aorta. He also performed a coronary bypass.

The status of Mesa, Ariz., as the Chicago Cubs’ spring training home is in jeopardy now that the Arizona Legislature has adjourned without passing legislation needed to keep the team in the state.

An agreement between the team and Mesa officials allows the Cubs to negotiate with other cities if Arizona lawmakers don’t pass legislation by July 12. Lawmakers ended their session Thursday, and a special session is unlikely.

Just as the Phillies are getting closer Brad Lidge back from the disabled list, Ryan Madson is going to be sidelined.

Madson, who filled in as the Phillies’ closer in Lidge’s absence, went on the disabled list because of a broken right toe.

Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Kris Benson could start throwing next week after an MRI exam revealed no structural damage in his strained right shoulder.
