They aren’t that type, Texas Tech coach says

Twitter’s popularity among athletes continues to be a bane for the people who coach them, and some coaches are striking back.

Texas Tech Coach Mike Leach is the latest to ban Twitter usage by his players. The decision came after linebacker Marlon Williams tweeted, “Wondering why I’m still in this meeting room when the head coach can’t even be on time to his [own] meeting.�

After Texas Tech lost to Houston to fall to 2-2, offensive lineman Brandon Carter tweeted, “This is not how I saw our season.�

The next day, Carter was suspended indefinitely for violating team rules.

Leach called Twitter and Facebook “stupid� and called Texas Tech’s Twitter users “a bunch of narcissists that want to sit and type stuff about themselves all the time. We’ll put mirrors in their lockers if that’s necessary but they don’t have to Twitter.�

In other tweeting news, New York Jets wide receiver David Clowney was benched by Coach Rex Ryan after he complained on Twitter about a lack of playing time.

After the Jets defeated the New England Patriots, Clowney tweeted, “1 play in the 1st Half, 4 plays in the 2nd half A bit disappointed about my playing time but very happy and satisfied about the win.�

When Ryan heard about Clowney’s tweet, he called the player into his office and told him he would be inactive for the game against Tennessee.

David Letterman congratulated the New York Yankees on clinching the American League East Division championship on his Monday show.

“It’s a good lesson,� he said. “You see kids, all you need is a dream and a billion-dollar payroll.�
