Cincinnati stops Oregon State comeback

Tony Pike threw for 332 yards and hit Mardy Gilyard with an 18-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter as No. 17 Cincinnati stopped a second-half Oregon State comeback bid for a 28-18 victory on Saturday at Corvallis, Ore.

The Bearcats (3-0) ended Oregon State’s streak of 26 straight nonconference victories at Reser Stadium, dating to a 67-28 win over Northern Illinois on Nov. 16, 1996.

Pike completed 31 of 49 passes and two touchdowns and Gilyard had nine catches for 65 yards.

Sean Canfield completed 29 of 45 passes for 240 yards and an interception for the Beavers (2-1). Jacquizz Rodgers’ nine-yard scoring run to open the second half was Oregon State’s lone touchdown.

Cincinnati built up a 21-8 halftime lead but didn’t score again until Gilyard’s TD catch.

No. 8 California 35, Minnesota 21 -- Jahvid Best rushed for 131 yards and a school-record five touchdowns to lift the visiting Golden Bears over the Golden Gophers.

Kevin Riley overcame a shaky start to finish with 252 yards pass for Cal, which had lost eight of its last nine on the road, including four in a row to end last season.

Eric Decker caught eight passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns and threw for another score for Minnesota.

Iowa 27, Arizona 17 -- Freshman running back Adam Robinson rushed for a career-high 101 yards and two touchdowns, and the host Hawkeyes from the Big Ten Conference held the Wildcats to eight first downs.

After the game, Arizona Coach Mike Stoops said tight end Rob Gronkowski, a third-team All-American last season as a sophomore, will have surgery this week for a strained back and miss the rest of the season.

Stanford 42, San Jose State 17 -- Chris Owusu opened the game with a 94-yard kickoff return and also caught a touchdown pass and Toby Gerhart ran for 113 yards and two touchdowns as the Cardinal won its home opener.

Arizona State 38, Louisiana Monroe 14 -- Omar Bolden returned the opening kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown and intercepted a pass at a half-empty Sun Devil Stadium. Arizona State turned in another strong defensive performance, with Travis Goethel also intercepting a pass. The Sun Devils have given up 17 points in two games.

Washington State 30, Southern Methodist 27 (OT) -- Nico Grasu kicked a 39-yard field goal in overtime as the Cougars overcame a 24-13 deficit in the third quarter. The Mustangs had the ball first in overtime, but Bo Levi Mitchell had a pass intercepted.
