CALIFORNIA BRIEFING / SAN PEDRO
A Los Angeles Police Department dive team searched Saturday for a handgun apparently tossed into the ocean off Point Fermin Park by a robbery suspect who had tumbled down a cliff with a police dog during a chase.
The incident began about 1:30 a.m. in the 1000 block of Paseo Del Mar “when a patrol officer heard gunshots and a woman screaming,†LAPD spokesman Gregory Baek said.
Responding officers encountered two suspects, both men in their mid-20s. One of the suspects was arrested at the scene, Baek said. The other pointed a gun at an officer and tried to fire, but ran off when the gun jammed, Baek said.
Police said they believe he tossed the gun into the ocean before tumbling. The suspect landed on the rocks below and suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, Baek said. The police dog was not injured.
