Despite a generally healthy Broadway economy that has seen box-office receipts climb for many shows, “Shrek the Musical” posted a closing notice Wednesday on the heels of reports that the DreamWorks Theatricals production had been struggling to cover its weekly costs.
“Shrek,” based on the popular 2001 animated film, will play its final performance at the Broadway Theatre on Jan. 3. The show opened last Dec. 14 following a tryout run in Seattle.
Despite the closure on Broadway, a national tour of “Shrek” is still set to begin in June in Chicago.
