New season of new eats

With fall comes a slew of openings, and the last couple of weeks have been busy ones for restaurateurs. Thomas Keller’s Bouchon, slated to open in November in Beverly Hills, may be the most anticipated, but the dining public can’t live on bistro fare alone -- can we? Here, some very-recently opened restaurants and news of others in the works:

Umami Burger opened its second location Friday in Los Feliz, an Adam Fleischman-Steve Arroyo collaboration in the former Cobras & Matadors space on Hollywood Boulevard. Salaryman is the beer bar connected to the kokeshi-doll-accented burger joint.

Raphael is expected to open in Studio City this month. Owner Alon Raphael calls the 60-seater “fine-dining casual, leaning more toward fine dining.” Chef Stephen Burkalis previously worked at the Water Grill in downtown L.A.

Chinese restaurant Philippe made its Melrose Avenue debut over the weekend in the former Dolce space, in all its red-white-and-black Deco-disco glory. Signature dishes include satay, “Mr. Cheng’s noodles” and “nine seasons spicy prawns.”

Expanding local mini-chain of “new school cafeterias” Lemonade has opened its latest location at MOCA downtown. Desserts include $1 mini-cupcakes.

Ryan Sweeney and Brandon Bradford of Verdugo bar have partnered with Adolfo Suaya of BoHo and Gaucho Grill to open the Surly Goat in West Hollywood on Santa Monica Boulevard. The beer-focused bar is slated to open by late December.

Brett Schoenhals, owner of Silver Lake’s Coffee Table, plans to open Cafe con Leche inside Self Help Graphics & Art in East L.A. He hopes to open early next year with a menu of soups, salads and sandwiches.

Mr. Cecil’s California Ribs lands in Manhattan Beach, serving ribs galore (beef ribs, baby back ribs, St. Louis-style ribs) and other barbecue favorites.

Also on the horizon: New York-based Cafe Habana’s Malibu and Venice outposts; be on the lookout for another Loteria from Jimmy Shaw; and Richard Drapkin (Grace, BLD) may help put Market Bar in the Pacific Electric Building downtown, a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant, bar, market and wine shop.
