Hundreds of government troops attacked insurgent positions just outside the capital, and the heart of Mogadishu suffered heavy shelling.
The surge in fighting, after a few days’ lull in a strong advance by Islamist insurgents, killed at least 13 people.
The militants are attempting to dislodge government forces from the few blocks of the capital they still control. But African Union peacekeepers are helping the government hold key installations such as the port, the airport and the presidential palace.
