Long Beach Wilson at Mission Viejo Capistrano
BASEBALL GAME OF THE DAY
Long Beach Wilson (21-10) at
Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley (21-6)
Why it matters: The first round of the Southern Section Division I playoffs begins with Wilson, a finalist last season, facing perhaps the No. 1 high school pitching prospect in the nation -- left-hander Tyler Matzek, who is 9-1 and set to become a first-round draft choice next month. Wilson was only 7-5 in the Moore League and has struggled because of injuries to its pitching staff, but the Bruins have been improving. Capistrano Valley, seeded No. 3, has a veteran lineup that’s built to go far in the playoffs.

TRACK
CITY SECTION PRELIMINARY MEET
Top contributors: Crenshaw’s DeAnthony Thomas won the boys’ 100 meters in 10.73 seconds, tied Santee’s Tevin Carter for the fastest time in the 200 (21.74) and anchored triumphant relay teams in the 4x100 and 4x400. Woodland Hills El Camino Real’s Jasmine Woods won the girls’ 100 in 12.38 seconds. Pablo Rosales of San Pedro swept the boys’ distance events, winning the 1,600 in 4:24.97 and the 3,200 in 9:55.13.
The scoop: Carter and Thomas were opponents in the Snoop Youth Football League several years ago. “He’s improved a lot,” Thomas said of Carter, who also qualified for the finals in the 100.
Why it matters: Top qualifiers advanced to the City finals May 28 at Birmingham.
