Sherman Oaks Notre Dame defeats Los Angeles Loyola, 5-1
GAME OF THE DAY
Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 5, Los Angeles Loyola 1
Top contributors: Sophomore pitcher Matt Lathuras of Notre Dame threw a complete game, giving up four hits while striking out six and walking one. Kelly Dugan of Notre Dame hit his eighth home run. Pedro Aldape of Notre Dame went four for four. AJ LaBruna of Loyola had two hits.
The scoop: Lathuras improved to 4-0 and showed he has become a dependable No. 2 pitcher behind ace Josh Goossen Brown. He did not give up any hits after the third inning.
Why it matters: Notre Dame won the Mission League championship, finishing two games ahead of second-place Encino Crespi, which lost to Mission Hills Alemany, 6-5. Notre Dame won the Southern Section Division III title last season and should receive a high seeding for the Division II playoffs. Loyola also earned a playoff berth.
Records: Notre Dame 22-5, 10-2; Loyola 16-13-1, 6-6.
