A Marine Super Cobra attack helicopter crashed late Tuesday in a mountainous part of eastern San Diego County, killing two pilots aboard, the Marine Corps said Wednesday.
The helicopter, assigned to the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station-based Medium Helicopter Squadron 166, crashed north of Interstate 8 at Kitchen Creek Road in the Cleveland National Forest. The crash sparked a two-acre fire; the helicopter was carrying unspecified ordnance.
The helicopter was part of the Camp Pendleton-based 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit training for a six-month deployment in the western Pacific.
