A wrong turn on Mexican trucks

Re “A roadblock to Mexico,” editorial, March 24
It does not happen every day, but I agreed with every word of this editorial. I never understood the idea of fixing what ain’t broke.
Our free-trade agreement with Mexico worked well for both countries. Why did Congress decide to smash it? As soon as we announced that Mexican trucks would no longer be allowed to travel more than several miles into the United States, Mexico retaliated by slapping tariffs on 90 U.S. exports.
Both sides lose, and the loss is double-fold -- in money and in relations with our neighbor. How many more of our legislators’ mistakes are we going to have to pay for? Congress cannot enjoy the benefits of free trade without holding up its end of the bargain.
