Re “The Playing Field Just Got a Lot Livelier,” by Patrick Goldstein, June 25: OK, so the Oscars never have been Cannes, but now Hollywood, second only to Bollywood as the kitsch capital of the world, literally and figuratively expands further into box-office culture.
Why double the number of nominees?
Why, to increase TV ratings for the awards show and to demonstrate that the academy also likes big, money-making movies.
Hey, we don’t call the movie business “the industry” because it manufactures art.
