GAME OF THE DAY
No. 21 Rancho Santa Margarita Tesoro (14-3, 1-0) at Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley (11-6, 0-1)
Tonight, 7.
Why it matters: Tesoro is considered the favorite to win the South Coast League, but the Titans are still adjusting to the loss of point guard Matt Bailey, who broke his foot on Dec. 30 and will be sidelined the rest of the season. Football players Cody Wittick, Brett Gudim and Robbie Picazo have gotten into basketball shape for Tesoro, which has one of the top centers in Orange County in 6-foot-8 Chris Manresa. Capistrano Valley is trying to end a four-game losing streak.
TUESDAY’S RESULT
No. 14 Santa Clarita Golden Valley 63, Newhall Hart 55
Leading contributors: Maverick Ahanmisi scored 16 points and Trevor Wiseman scored 15 for Golden Valley. Ben Kimble had 16 points for Hart.
The scoop: Golden Valley trailed by 10 points in the third quarter but picked up the game’s pace with better defensive intensity to pull out its first Foothill League victory after finishing 0-10 last season.
Why it matters: Golden Valley is ranked No. 4 in Southern Section Division III-A and has never won a league title in any sport since the school opened in 2004.
Records: Golden Valley 16-1, 1-0; Hart 11-7, 0-1.
