Roland Burris will be sworn in as a U.S. senator Thursday, ending the saga of his appointment by impeached Illinois Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich. Vice President Dick Cheney, in his role as president of the Senate, will do the honors. Sen. Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.), the assistant majority leader who initially blocked the appointment on the grounds that anyone Blagojevich appointed would be tainted, will hold a reception in Burris’ honor.
Blagojevich faces federal corruption charges, including that he tried to sell the seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama.
