U.S. toy-making firms punished

Regarding the story, “For toy makers, rules to protect kids may be toxic,” Dec. 23:

Thank you for the story on the perils facing American toy manufacturers. It is so wrong to penalize responsible American toy manufacturers for the sins of the greedy American companies that have exported manufacturing to China, such as Mattel. Mattel used to be an American toy manufacturer.

I have given up on purchasing items made in China out of a sense of patriotism for our country. We need jobs here, not there. It’s cheaper to manufacture there because they don’t have the environmental concerns and labor concerns that we have in America.

To require American manufacturers to comply with strict guidelines against poisoning our children when no claims have been made against American manufacturers is wrong. There is nothing wrong with analyzing the raw materials and evaluating the processing systems to ensure that no poisonous materials are being introduced during manufacturing, as a compromise to evaluating every toy.
