A Greek court convicted a prison guard of misdemeanor negligence charges today for failing to stop the helicopter escape of two convicts, but he was released with a three-year suspended sentence.
Three other guards arrested after Sunday’s breakout were cleared of all charges.
A police manhunt continued for bank robber Vassilis Paleokostas and murderer Alket Rizaj. The two were whisked out of the Korydallos prison in western Athens aboard a helicopter that had been rented and then hijacked at gunpoint by their accomplices. The pair staged an almost identical escape from the same prison in 2006.
