CALIFORNIA BRIEFING / MISSION VIEJO
A 4-year-old girl died after she became trapped in a washing machine, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said Tuesday.
The child, identified as Kayley Ishii, apparently climbed into a front-loading washing machine Monday afternoon at her home in Mission Viejo, said Sheriff’s Department spokesman Jim Amormino. Her mother told investigators the girl’s 15-month-old brother managed to start the machine, and it was several minutes before she realized what had happened.
“The mother frantically tried to rescue the daughter and called paramedics,†Amormino said. The child was rushed to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo, where she died about 8:30 p.m., he said.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death. The incident is under investigation, but Amormino said it was possible that the case would be deemed a “tragic accident.â€
