Personal bankruptcy filings in the U.S. rose 34% in January compared with a year earlier as the deepening economic crisis drove many people to seek protection from creditors.
Individual bankruptcy filings climbed to 88,773, up more than a third from a year earlier and 4.5% higher than the 84,926 filings in December, the National Bankruptcy Research Center said.
