Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett went home from the hospital where he was treated after a man shattered his hand and knocked out two of his front teeth as the mayor defended a woman who was screaming for someone to call 911.

His office said Barrett was at home resting and looking forward to returning to work.

The mayor, 55, has been lauded by family, friends and even President Obama for trying to help the woman and her 1-year-old granddaughter in a parking lot near the Wisconsin State Fair on Saturday night.

The president called the Democratic mayor and commended him for bravery, according to a statement from the White House.
