Flyers stay alive by dominating Penguins

The Philadelphia Flyers were determined not to be embarrassed, upstaged and outworked in a Game 5 in Pittsburgh, not this season. Their desperation paid off with a comeback victory in a series that looked to be lost.

Arron Asham and Claude Giroux, role players on a team filled with goal scorers, got the first two goals, and the Flyers avoided elimination by beating the Penguins, 3-0, Thursday night in Pittsburgh to force Game 6 in the Eastern Conference first-round series.

Martin Biron made 28 saves, and Mike Knuble also scored for Philadelphia.

Game 6 is Saturday in Philadelphia.

New Jersey 1, Carolina 0 -- Martin Brodeur tied Patrick Roy’s NHL record for playoff shutouts, making 44 saves to help the Devils take a 3-2 series lead at Newark, N.J.

David Clarkson scored a power-play goal in helping Brodeur post his 23rd postseason shutout and win a great goaltending duel with Cam Ward, who stopped 41 shots.

Game 6 is Sunday in Carolina.

Detroit 6, Columbus 5 -- Johan Franzen scored on a power play with 46.6 seconds left in Columbus, Ohio, to give the Red Wings a first-round sweep in the Western Conference series.

The call that led to the man advantage was hotly disputed by the Blue Jackets, who were assessed a bench minor for too many men on the ice.

Marian Hossa had two goals, Nicklas Lidstrom and Tomas Holmstrom each had a goal and an assist, and Daniel Cleary also scored for the defending Stanley Cup champion Red Wings.
