In celebration of its 10th anniversary, “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire” is returning to prime time, complete with its original host, Regis Philbin.
ABC will bring back the game show for two weeks, starting Aug. 9 at 8 p.m.
TV Week reported that ABC had been considering reviving the format for some time but hadn’t been able to lock a deal with Philbin until now. The success of the Oscar-winning film “Slumdog Millionaire,” about a young contestant on the Indian version of the show, also helped.
The show was a huge hit when it debuted in 1999 but overexposure led to its prime-time cancellation in 2002. It has continued in syndication with Meredith Vieira as host.
