NEW YORK — Carlos Delgado hit a home run, Oliver Perez pitched six solid innings and New York defeated San Diego, 7-2, Wednesday to end the Padres’ winning streak at five games.
After giving up eight runs and five walks in 4 1/3 innings against Cincinnati last week, Perez (1-1) held the Padres to one run and three hits.
One home run shy of 500, Gary Sheffield got his first start for the Mets, in right field. He was hitless in two at-bats with a walk and scored a run.
It was Sheffield’s first start in the outfield since May 16, with Detroit.
The Mets said that No. 2 starter Mike Pelfrey has tendinitis in his pitching forearm and might sit out his next scheduled start, Sunday against Milwaukee.
