Water drops quell canyon brush fire

A brush fire in a mid-city canyon threatened homes Friday before being brought under control by more than 100 firefighters and repeated water drops by two helicopters and two fixed-wing Super Scoopers, fire officials said.
The fire broke out about 2:30 p.m. in a canyon near Morse High School in the Skyline area of the city. The high school and a nearby elementary school were evacuated, as were homeowners.
It was the second use of Super Scoopers this week in San Diego County.
The two aircraft, each of which can release 1,600 gallons of water per drop, were also credited with helping stop the 4,000-acre Juliet fire at Camp Pendleton from destroying homes in Oceanside.
The Board of Supervisors is leasing the two Super Scoopers and a command plane for $3 million for the fire season.
