at Virginia 35, East Carolina 20: Cedric Peerman ran for 173 yards and two long touchdowns, and the Cavaliers (3-3) turned back a second-half rally to beat the Pirates (3-3) at Charlottesville. East Carolina converted a pair of interceptions into an early 6-0 lead. But Peerman rallied Virginia with scoring runs of 78 and 60 yards. Mikell Simpson had a five-yard touchdown run to cap a 61-yard drive, and Marc Verica connected with Kevin Ogletree on a 30-yard touchdown pass for a 28-6 halftime lead. But the Pirates got a lift from Dwayne Harris’ 59-yard return of the second-half kickoff and cut the lead to 28-20 on Jonathan Williams’ one-yard touchdown run and Patrick Pinkney’s 10-yard scoring pass to Brandon Simmons.
at Miami 20, Central Florida 14: Graig Cooper had a career-high 23 rushes for 90 yards, including the clinching touchdown after a muffed punt return late in the fourth quarter, and the Hurricanes (3-3) pulled out a sloppy victory over the Knights (2-4) to end a two-game losing streak. Robert Marve found Travis Benjamin with a 25-yard touchdown pass in the opening quarter for Miami, offsetting part of a three-interception day for the Hurricanes’ starting quarterback. Miami’s defense simply overwhelmed the Knights, forcing Central Florida into a school-record 12 punts and giving up only 78 yards.
at Georgia Tech 10, Gardner Webb 7: Derrick Morgan tipped a 43-yard field-goal attempt by Ryan Gates with three seconds left, helping the Yellow Jackets (5-1) hold on for an unexpectedly difficult victory over the Runnin’ Bulldogs (2-4) at Atlanta. Despite boasting a ground game that ranked fifth in the nation, Georgia Tech rushed for only 79 yards, nearly 210 under its average as third-string quarterback Calvin Booker struggled with his timing in Coach Paul Johnson’s triple-option attack. Starter Josh Nesbitt didn’t play for the second straight game because of a strained hamstring.
