Bill Plaschke’s story of Westmont College’s soccer match following the fire was very moving, for obvious reasons.
But in describing the generosity of Azusa Pacific in rescheduling the game and hosting its rival, there was not even a scant mention of APU’s (and Westmont’s, for that matter) evangelical Christian foundation and mission. Certainly APU’s Christian emphasis contributed to its hospitality, possibly its loss and ultimately the graciousness that Plaschke admittedly did describe. But the complete failure to mention the schools’ Christian emphasis almost comes off as censorship, certainly contrary to the image The Times wants to project of Christians in this post-Proposition 8 climate.

Your articulate and insightful story of sportsmanship, courage and heartwarming coverage of this Westmont versus Azusa Pacific soccer game was so very well done.
It may be that I am even more taken in that I have a daughter who is a senior at Westmont and our family is still working through all of the grief felt on campus.
