Somali security forces and Islamic insurgents engaged in one of the fiercest gun battles in recent weeks in the capital, Mogadishu, killing at least 17 people and wounding six, police and witnesses said.
The two-hour clash erupted when insurgents attacked the house of a local government official, Mogadishu residents said. It was not immediately clear if the dead were mostly civilians or insurgents.
Police officer Abdinur Salad said two soldiers were killed in the clash and six other soldiers were wounded.
