Goggin, Perry tied at very rough Memorial

Mathew Goggin birdied four of the first five holes Friday before strapping in for a wild ride of birdies and bogeys that added up to an even-par 72 that tied him for the lead with two-time champion Kenny Perry after the second round of the Memorial tournament at Dublin, Ohio.

Perry recovered from a rugged start for a 71 and joined Goggin at seven-under 137. Jerry Kelly trails by one after shooting a 72.

The Muirfield Village course’s ankle-deep rough swallowed up errant shots and its greens were as slick as glass.

Only three players broke 70, with Johnson Wagner turning in a remarkable 67. Twenty players couldn’t break 80.

Phil Mickelson chopped his way to a 75 and was 10 shots behind. Sergio Garcia is 12 back after a 77, and Ernie Els shot a 78 to miss the cut by one shot.

Karrie Webb shot a 66 and shared the lead at 13 under with Sophie Gustafson (65) after two rounds of the LPGA’s Ginn Tribute at Mount Pleasant, S.C.

Annika Sorenstam also shot a 66 and moved from a tie for 60th into a tie for eighth, seven shots out of the lead.

R.W. Eaks and Lonnie Nielsen shot five-under-par 66s to share the first-round lead at the Principal Charity Classic, a Champions Tour event at West Des Moines, Iowa.

Joey Sindelar, Tom Purtzer, Kirk Hanefeld and Mark McNulty are one stroke back.

Michelle Wie shot a three-under 69 to keep pace at the Ladies German Open at Munich. She was tied for sixth, three shots off the lead, after the rain-delayed second round

Kevin Chappell shot a four-under-par 68 to help UCLA take a three-stroke lead over USC and Clemson after the third round of the NCAA golf championship at West Lafayette, Ind.

Chappell also took the individual lead by four strokes over Clemson’s Kyle Stanley and Washington’s Nick Taylor.

UCLA put itself in contention for the championship with a three-round total of 888. Defending champion Stanford was five strokes back, and 10-time NCAA champion Oklahoma State was in fifth at 895.

MOTOR RACING

Biffle earns pole for Dover race

Greg Biffle held off the Busch brothers, turning a lap of 155.219 mph at Dover (Del.) International Speedway to take the pole position for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Best Buy 400.

Kurt Busch was second at 153.971, and points leader Kyle Busch was third at 153.767.

Scott Speed made it three consecutive first-time winners in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, pulling away to a win at Dover International Speedway.

BASKETBALL

Fullerton to play in Anaheim Classic

Cal State Fullerton, Arizona State, Providence and Wake Forest are among the eight teams that will play in the second annual Anaheim Classic.

Also participating in the event Nov. 27-30 are Baylor, St. Mary’s, Charlotte and Texas El Paso. The 12-game tournament will be played at the Anaheim Convention Center.

USC won the inaugural Anaheim Classic last year.

Connecticut Coach Jim Calhoun has been diagnosed for a second time with skin cancer.

The 66-year-old Hall of Fame coach, who said he has no plans to retire, will begin six weeks of radiation treatments June 24.

UCLA softball team loses to Arizona State

Katie Burkhart pitched a four-hitter as Arizona State defeated UCLA, 4-0, in the second round of the softball College World Series at Oklahoma City. The Bruins (51-8) play today at 4 p.m. PDT against the winner of an earlier game between Florida and Virginia Tech.

A jury trial for USC recruit Maurice Simmons is set to begin July 24 in Compton Superior Court, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office said.

Simmons, a linebacker from Compton Dominguez, has pleaded not guilty to felony charges of robbery and assault with a firearm and a misdemeanor charge of permitting a loaded firearm in a vehicle.

Simmons, 18, and another man, Lamont Lee Hall, 19, were arrested in March in connection with an incident that took place in Compton.

Adrian Serioux’s foul against the Galaxy’s David Beckham on May 18 drew an additional $1,000 fine from Major League Soccer for the FC Dallas defender.

Serioux was ejected in the 75th minute of the game, bringing an automatic $250 fine.

Zac Sunderland, 16, the Thousand Oaks High sophomore who had planned to begin sailing solo around the world today, has postponed his journey until June 14.

The crew preparing his 36-foot sailboat discovered a broken gear-box seal on an old Palmer engine, for which parts are not readily available, so the engine will be replaced.

“This is a huge disappointment in some ways but practically speaking it is for the best,� Sunderland blogged on his website: Zacsunderland.com.

The new departure date coincides with the Marina del Rey Boat Show on June 12-15 at Burton Chace Park. Sunderland’s afternoon departure will become a show spectacle.
