Republicans sue mayor over filing

Two high-profile Republicans are suing Huntington Beach Mayor Debbie Cook, a Democrat campaigning to unseat the GOP congressional incumbent, for listing her non-elected mayoral title on her candidate filing.
Cook is a city councilwoman, and the mayor is selected each year by the seven-member council.
“The real issue is she’s not playing by the rules,” said Keith Carlson, an attorney suing Cook and the Orange County Registrar of Voters.
He is treasurer of the California GOP but is filing suit as an individual and is represented by Mike Schroeder, former state GOP chairman.
Cook, challenging Rep. Dana Rohrabacher in the June 3 primary, calls the move “an attempt to distract the campaign.”
There are three other congressional candidates on the county ballot, all Republicans, who listed non-elected mayoral titles in their filings.
