HIT AND MISS

Hit: Andy Svoboda, a second alternate who made it into the field when Brett Wetterich withdrew because of a wrist injury, wasn’t even going to come to Torrey Pines after he lost a five-hole playoff in sectional qualifying. But the 28-year-old mini-tour regular from Old Oaks Country Club in Purchase, N.Y., arrived last Friday after a group of club members paid for his flight. He couldn’t play a practice round because of his status as an alternate and found out at noon Thursday he had a 1:47 p.m. tee time. He shot a six-over 77.
Miss: Opening day might as well be closing day for defending champion Angel Cabrera, who was seven over on his first eight holes on his way to a 79.
