Re “Unarmed man is killed by deputy,†July 25

Hard questions need to be asked: Why did these Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies set foot on private property without a search warrant or without a call about a disturbance -- well, basically, without any probable cause at all?

As a white, middle-class professional, the Los Angeles Police Department and the county Sheriff’s Department frighten the hell out of me.

Why, when Christian Portillo was shot by a sheriff’s deputy while sitting in his own car in his own driveway doing nothing illegal, would you find it necessary or relevant to cite a 15-year-old drug conviction? Does that explain or mitigate his murder?
