He’s what the doctor ordered
Re “DeBakey’s heart,†Opinion, July 16
Like Peter Mehlman, I am a child of the 1960s who remembers reading with amazement about Dr. Michael E. DeBakey, Dr. Denton Cooley and Dr. Christiaan Barnard.
They were like gods who walked the Earth, and I too thought about becoming a doctor but didn’t.
How wonderful, though, that Mehlman went on to become a writer.
In paying very personal tribute to DeBakey, Mehlman may not have saved a life, but he can be assured that the character of DeBakey as a human being -- kind, gracious, generous, enthusiastic -- will be remembered and honored by all who read Mehlman’s lovely appreciation of the good doctor’s life.
