USC’s Mayo signs with Grizzlies

First-round draft pick O.J. Mayo signed a multiyear contract Tuesday with the Memphis Grizzlies.

Memphis got the rights to Mayo, the No. 3 overall selection, in an eight-player trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves hours after the NBA draft ended.

Mayo, a 6-foot-5, 200-pound guard, averaged 20.7 points, 3.3 assists and 1.6 steals a game as a freshman at USC.

The Grizzlies also announced the signing of forward Darrell Arthur, the 27th selection in the draft.

The Orlando Magic will sign Mickael Pietrus to a multiyear deal, Florida Today reported on its website.

The deal is set to become official when the NBA’s free-agent signing period opens today.

Magic General Manager Otis Smith confirmed the deal to the newspaper and it’s expected that Pietrus will immediately slide into the starting shooting guard spot with Orlando.

Pietrus averaged 7.2 points in 66 games last season for Golden State.

The New York Knicks signed Danilo Gallinari, the sixth pick overall, and expect to have him ready to play in summer league games next week in Las Vegas.

The 6-8 Gallinari, 19, is a versatile offensive player who led his team, Armani Jeans of Milan, with 17.5 points per game.

Other first-round picks who signed: Joe Alexander (No. 8) with Milwaukee; Jason Thompson (No. 12) with Sacramento; D.J. Augustin (No. 9) and Alexis Ajinca (No. 20) with Charlotte.

The Toronto Raptors signed guard Hassan Adams to a two-year deal. Adams, who attended Westchester High, last played in the NBA in 2006-07 with New Jersey.

There was another sign of progress in the Seattle SuperSonics’ transition to Oklahoma City as the team’s website was updated to include its new home.

A visit to SuperSonics.com redirects visitors to the NBA Oklahoma City site, where logos with the team’s former name have been taken down.
