Prison guard guilty of perjury
A former correctional officer at a Chino prison pleaded guilty to a federal perjury charge Wednesday, admitting that she lied to a grand jury that was investigating another guard suspected of helping a white prison gang, authorities said.
Linda Diane Sherrow, 49, admitted lying to the grand jury in 2004 as it investigated guard Shane Allyn Ziska of the California Institution for Men in Chino, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.
Sherrow had denied that she saw Ziska open cell doors and allow members of a white supremacist gang to roam freely, communicate with one another, pass illegal contraband and assault other inmates, which in fact she had seen, the U.S. attorney said.
Ziska was convicted at trial and sentenced to 17 1/2 years in federal prison.
Sherrow, of Corona, is scheduled to be sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Terry J. Hatter Jr. on April 21. She faces a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison.
