Project in historic district is denied
The city Landmarks Commission has denied a plan to build a two-story house at the site of a historic home in Ocean Park’s Third Street Neighborhood Historic District.
Owner Mark Woollen’s proposal to reconstruct a flat-roofed, two-story house behind his 1905 bungalow had riled neighbors, who described it as Modernist and out of sync with the prevailing style of gables, pitched roofs, wide overhanging eaves, bay windows, front porches and horizontal wood siding.
The panel voted 3 to 2 in favor, but the project needed four votes to pass. Two commissioners had recused themselves.
Woollen said Thursday that he had not yet decided whether to appeal the decision to the Santa Monica City Council.
